Synopsis

‘Inherit The Wind’ opens in the small town of Hillsboro, where a little boy named Howard teases a little girl named Melinda about once being a worm. Soon, a young woman named Rachel enters the courthouse square and asks a bailiff named Meeker if she can see Bert Cates.

Bert Cates, a schoolteacher, has been arrested for teaching Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution, in violation of a law prohibiting its teaching in schools. His trial attracts national attention and brings two prominent lawyers to Hillsboro: Matthew Harrison Brady, who leads the prosecution, and Henry Drummond, who defends Cates.

As the courtroom becomes a battleground between religious fundamentalism and scientific thought, the trial raises questions about freedom of expression, individual beliefs and the right to think independently. Rachel, who initially urges Bert to abandon his fight, must also confront her own convictions.

Written by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee, Inherit the Wind is a powerful courtroom drama inspired by the famous 1925 Scopes Trial in Tennessee. Through its fictional characters, the play explores the conflict between established beliefs and intellectual freedom.
